So I really CAN choose how I feel

I've been having lots of discussions about the ability choose how we think and feel. While I can grasp this concept intellectually, that has done little to change my actual experience. This morning I was actually able to consciously decide that I didn't want to feel how I was feeling, and let go of it instantaneously. The situation was pretty insignificant, petty even, but the fact that I was able to immediately change my state of mind gives me confidence that this can be done no matter what the situation is.

I was getting ready for school in the morning, and my mother and I were both getting on eachother's nerves a bit. We get along very well but once in a while something small like this will happen. Anyways, I was about to leave feeling extremely irritated and I saw just how pointless it was to feel this way the entire day over something so small. Immediately I felt the urge to give her a hug and the feeling of anger literally melted away right that moment. Often I'll shrug these feeling off because in my head I'll convince myself that it is petty, but the feeling will still linger. This time it was completely gone and I felt extremely good for having been able to choose that I did not want to leave home feeling the anger.

A Course in Miracles describes a miracle as "a shift in perception from fear to love", and that there are no order in difficulties in miracles, so one is not harder or more possible than another. I really think this describes the situation perfectly, as my perception shifted and my emotional state changed with it. This also means that such a shift in perception is equally possible in any other situation, no matter how big or overwhelming it may seem. If the choice really comes down to our perception, then why should the situation matter? All we have to do is choose a different perception and the situation will improve as a result.

My story remains undramatic but it renews my faith that we really do have a choice. I love when I am able to actually experience the ideas that are often just stuck in my mind.

It's amazing how discord between two people can cause such unpleasant results, manifesting even physically due to stress. Sometimes my husband and I will get into it and when that happens I feel just awful, both mentally and physically. I'm glad that we're able to quickly mend things because I couldn't handle being in such a chaotic state all the time.

I've never been comfortable having issues with other people my entire life. It just proves to me how connected we really are, even when appearances may seem to say otherwise.

I would not consider these instances of realization petty at all. You are discovering a great truth and that is, we have the chose to how we feel. We make these choices on some level all day long. Awareness of this is a key to a much happier and balanced life. Embrace these moments no matter how trival they may seem.

I can't stand conflict, which never really seems to solve the issue anyways. Two people who are upset can say and do a lot of hurtful things that they later regret

Thank you I am happy to read a reply from you as well! I'm just curious, but do you find that most of the time you still have difficulty making this choice or have you reached a point where it comes naturally? For me this is still a rare event, if not an isolated one.

Yes you are right...and whenever a truth is experienced it becomes harder to claim ignorance afterward No more victim syndrome when feeling hurt/upset/angry/etc.

Thank you very much. It is such a simple concept to understand, but the knowledge itself doesn't seem to do very much.

Brian, this question is really tricky to answer. I say "tricky" because everything is a matter of choice and what we say is basically the quickest way to make a choice "solid". So for me to say "Yes, I still have difficulty" is self-defeating because I am choosing to give strength to the belief that there is a such thing as "difficult".
What I CAN say however is that, while not "hard", the choices are visible more often. Practice, practice, practice...every time you make a conscious choice you reinforce your belief that you CAN as well as increasing your ability to see WHEN you can. Literally, every concious choice brings you closer to responsibility and thus the Moment. Choose to believe it's easy...like breathing....reality will follow suit and it will become so.

Each moment is a chance to choose...Get close to the moment and you'll find more opportunities to choose.
